MONTHLY MESSAGE from TRACY, KATE & MEG

June 2008 - Change is in the Air

CHANGE seems to be the watchword of the 2008 elections, and change is certainly in the air at this time in the world at large. Our economy, our institutions, our weather patterns, our global relationships and our planet are all in a state of change and evolution at this time. So a key question for all of us to consider is this: How do we respond to the energy of change in our lives?

There is a natural impulse in all of us to resist change--to stick with what is predictable, familiar and known. Change can create a feeling of gnawing instability, low-level anxiety or downright panic. On the other hand, it can also create a sense of new opportunity, creative excitement and imaginative possibility. It all depends on our mindset.

If we attend and respond to change only on the surface level of our lives, we can quickly become frantic and exhausted. For many of us, change is happening too fast at this time to catch up to it, and it is creating a sense of fear and trepidation about the future. But if we take a cue from the science of chaos theory we will remember that even in the midst of apparent chaos there is a deep coherence and intentionality about the universe. Chaos theory teaches that even events that appear to be haphazard and random are actually following an unseen pattern and rhythm buried deep below the surface patterns.

Likewise, if we use our spiritual senses to go below the surface level of our daily lives, we can connect with a deep stillness and compassionate presence that resides within us all. Within that stillness we will find the peace and calm so many of us ache for in a surface world marked by rapid change and escalating fear. If we can spend time each day resting in that presence, we will begin to notice that life slows down and we can attend to the important parts of our lives rather than the urgent and anxiety-producing parts of our lives. As we spend time each day in quiet reflection, prayer and meditation, we can begin to trust in the unseen power and presence of God and in the immense and miraculous possibilities in our lives and in our world. The more we attend to our lives and to change from that deeper sense of presence the more confidence we will have that we can create the lives and the world we imagine.
